What is an annulment?
An annulment is a procedure that declares a marriage to be void. Annulment actions are sought when the validity of a marriage is in question. An annulment, unlike a divorce, states that the marriage in question was never valid and therefore, as if it never happened at all. Some people prefer an annulment because of possible religious consequences of divorce which might disavow re-marriage in a religious institution.

One of the parties to the so-called marriage has to bring a petition for annulment, and by doing so, they are asking that the court declare the marriage to be void.
